Canadian Culture

It is a great pleasure to Winton International Academy to welcome you in Canada, but before visiting us we invite you to learn more about our Canadian Culture.

What does multicultural mean in Canada?
Canada is a multicultural country. Canadians come from a vast range of nations, races, religions, and heritage. This multicultural diversity comes from centuries of immigration. As a result, a diverse population is now one of the distinctive features of Canadian society.

Official symbols of Canada: the maple leaf, the beaver, the Canadian horse, and the Canada goose. National Sports: Ice Hockey is the national winter sport and Lacrosse the national summer sport.

Official colors: red and white.

Canadians are predominantly tolerant, polite, and conservative. They’re very community-oriented and though most social gatherings take place in private spaces such as homes and restaurants, they instill the sense of giving back to the community.

Known as ‘the just society’, Canada’s culture is underpinned by its tolerance, respect and community-orientation. Canadians are generally individualistic, yet they also emphasize and value everyone’s contribution to their community.

Canadians are known to be some of the most polite, tactful, and peace-loving human beings on the planet. In fact, a stereotypical Canadian is someone who apologizes despite not being at fault. To a certain extent, this is true. Society greatly values tolerance, humility as well as non-violence.

What is a decent dress code?
One must dress as per the occasion. Avoid wearing jeans, capris, shorts, T-Shirts, or sleeveless dresses to work. Follow a professional dress code. Make sure you feel comfortable in whatever you wear. It is not always necessary to wear expensive clothes but rather wear something which looks good on you.

Common traditions

  • Handshaking is the most common form of greeting – with a strong grip and eye contact.
    •  Leave footwear inside the entrance when you enter someone’s home.
    • If invited to someone’s home for dinner, take a box of good chocolates, flowers, or a bottle of wine. Gifts are usually opened when received.
  • Give someone his/her personal space in a conversation, avoiding touching as much as possible.
